Kathy’s first novel, Red Rooster, was a finalist in the Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award. The novel is inspired by the story of Stephanie St. Clair, a Black woman who dared challenge the notorious white gangster Dutch Schultz for control of the Harlem numbers in the 1930’s.  There is also a family connection – Kathy’s family were big players in the Baltimore numbers.

Three of her short stories have been selected in short story competitions for publication in Sisters in Crime and Bouchercon, the annual world mystery convention, anthologies.

Wild Fire

Published in Bouchercon’s August 2023 anthology Killin’ Time in San Diego. Wild Fire features a Black female fire investigator whose life is, pun intended, a hot mess!

The Body in the Barrel

Published in the Partners in Crime-San Diego Chapter’s July 2023 anthology Crime Under the Sun. The story was inspired by the real-life discovery of a body in a barrel in Lake Mead in 2022. The barrel had been submerged under the lake for decades, but 2022’s historic drought exposed the lake bottom to the surface.

The Ink Well

Published in the April 2021 Sisters in Crime-Los Angeles anthology Avenging Angelenos. The story was inspired by Ink Well Beach, a segregated beach in Santa Monica in the 1950’s.

Kathy’s most recent thriller, Baltimore Rules, explores the dynamics of street justice as seen through the eyes of a Black Vietnam War veteran struggling with PTSD.
